General Information

Occurring typically in massive form, sodalite is found as vein fillings in plutonic igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites. Sodalite, whose formula can be rewritten 3NaAlSiO4 · NaCl, is found in silica-poor leucite-bearing rocks saturated with sodium chloride, a mineral that could be made by baking an evaporite deposit left behind by a vanished ocean in contact with undifferentiated silica-poor rocks.
