General Information

Jasper is formed from silica-rich sedimentary rocks that have been subjected to intense pressure and heat over time.  Red Jasper forms when microscopic quartz crystals aggregate and become cemented together. The red colour is typically caused by the presence of iron oxide impurities, specifically haematite. Other impurities can cause variations in colour, such as yellow from goethite or brown from clay.
