General Information
It can form in metamorphic rocks sometimes, but it's far more commonly associated with granite. As massive bodies of granitic magma slowly cool, aquamarine and other forms of beryl grow in vugs or pegmatite veins, nurtured by hot water saturated with metals and minerals.
When the magma gradually cools, the thermal activity within the pegmatites begins to form crystals within the voids. This prolonged process can take anywhere from tens of thousands to millions of years. Silicate-based minerals, like aquamarine, need a longer time to crystallize compared to other minerals.
